How to Get The American National Corpus

Commercial Users

To obtain the ANC for use in the development of any commercial product--including reference works, textbooks, and software--you must be a member of the ANC Consortium. If you are not a Consortium member, you can join by contacting the ANC Project Manager, Randi Reppen.

Consortium dues are now set at $40,000, payable in two annual installments of $20,000 each. Acquisition of the corpus requires signing license agreements, obtained through the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC).

Non-commercial Users

The ANC First Release is available for non-commercial use from the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) for a nominal processing fee of $75. For more information, consult the LDC catalogue entry for the ANC or contact the LDC Office.

How to Use The American National Corpus

The merged version of the ANC First Release data can be used with the British National Corpus (BNC) search engine, XAIRA, the XML version of the BNC's original search software, SARA. Currently, XAIRA is under development, but it can be run on Windows platforms in a beta version. Release of the official version is expected at the end of 2004. For more information on XAIRA and how to download it, consult the XAIRA web site.

The merged version of the ANC can also be run using MonoConc, which is available for an educational price of $85. However, MonoConc cannot be run on the full First Release--only portions of the data can be loaded at a time.

The ANC Second Release will include a front end to XAIRA that will allow for using the ANC in stand-off form, and enable the user to choose which annotations are to be included for searching/browsing.
